In this part of south-eastern Biella, more than a hundred Resistance fighters died, some of the six hundred and sixty-seven who lost their lives in the area between 1943 and 1945.
For the Eightieth Commemoration on March 8 and 9, 2025, a specially formed Committee of public and private entities, coordinated by Manuele Cecconello as project manager, has organized a program of events aimed at commemorating the Salussola Massacre through a multidisciplinary and intergenerational approach.
The programme included artistic and educational events, theatrical and musical performances, an art exhibition, a conference-show, the production and presentation of the documentary “It happened in Salussola. March 9, 1945.The goal was to use contemporary languages to convey universal values of freedom, peace, and justice, creating new connections between generations and promoting active civic participation.
It happened in Salussola. March 9, 1945. reconstructs the events of Salussola using interviews with experts and historians of the Resistance. It recovers and interprets archival documents, particularly the filmed interview with the sole survivor of the massacre, Sergio Canuto Rosa, the partisan "Painter." The historical and topographical reconnaissance is interwoven with the testimonies of relatives of some of the fallen and the last eyewitnesses to the massacre. The film concludes with the performance "Cuore di pietra," presented to the public on the day of the 2025 Institutional Commemoration: a salvific allegory centered on "Bella ciao" to remember and sublimate the devastation inflicted on Garibaldi's partisans.
