Francesca, a young woman from Turin, granddaughter of Istrian exiles, has lost her grandmother's recipe book, which included, among other things, the now unobtainable recipe for "Il Castello di Croccante." She sets out in search of the recipe, and in an attempt to piece together her grandmother's entire recipe book, recipe by recipe, she travels far and wide across Italy, finally finding herself in the beautiful land of Istria, where she must confront its painful and controversial history.
Crossing physical and emotional boundaries, Francesca will encounter the recurring tragedies of the exodus and the foibe, and the victims, whether they "left or stayed." And it is through food that she will find a basis for dialogue and community.
His gaze leads us to a beautiful land, whose traditions are jealously guarded, even as memories seem lost or ignored. We will discover its spectacular landscapes, its typical cuisines, its markets, and it will be the intrinsic vital essence of food that will restore nourishment to shattered identities and obsessive, unresolved memories.
Following her own personal path, which will somehow push her to confront her own unresolved identity, she will eventually find herself faced with an indefinable and unexpected moment of reconciliation.
