Book Description

The love story of two rebellious souls chasing each other through the irreverent, adrenaline-fueled, and painful 1980s. Overwhelming and melancholic, Gli indegni It tells of the poignant anxiety of life that tears apart every youth.

«Francesco Abate gracefully constructs the coming-of-age novel of a restless generation.» Ursula Beretta, The Reading

At sixteen, Livio leaves home without shoes and runs away. He's fed up with his family's confines and wants to go to Florence to listen to Patti Smith. He's not a pack leader, but rather a midfielder. He's an enthusiastic boy, perhaps a little awkward: he always repeats "Livio from Cagliari" to anyone who asks him who he is. At a concert, he meets Anaïs, uninhibited and magnetic, and falls madly in love. She introduces him to drugs, to partying beyond all limits, to sexual freedom, dragging him into a new era of his life, from punk to house music, from gay clubs to crowded rainbow discos. With Anaïs, Livio also begins to frequent the home of Cesare, a kind man who welcomes the "unworthy" under his roof: bohemian artists and young people who refuse to surrender to society's imposed lifestyles. But Anaïs runs too fast, and Livio immediately loses her, finds her again, and loses her a thousand more times. For a decade, he tries to reach her without ever truly succeeding, doggedly searching for her in the bodies of everyone he meets. He will find her in Paris, London, then back in Cagliari, but increasingly lost in a vortex of sex and drugs, bad relationships, and missteps. Until an unexpected and moving epilogue.

"The Missing Boys" is a visual narrative about the genesis of an independent music scene, conceived as a circular journey balanced between two timelines, the narration of the past and the memory of an augmented present, that of the "missing boy" imprisoned within an eternal youth.
