LOGO-STREEEN-+QR In 2017, we began exploring the possibility of creating a movie screening system that would allow moviegoers to rewatch the film they'd just seen in the theater on their home devices for a few days. We wanted to make a small contribution to trying to end the war between the world of streaming and movie theaters. One initial idea was to bring the two experiences together using codes of some sort. Why not add a code to movie tickets to allow you to rewatch the film at home, or any extra content? This type of approach proved particularly interesting when applied to festivals. By purchasing a single subscription, you could, for example, decide which films to watch in the theater and which on your home screen, for a set and limited time. The combination of the theater and streaming thus gave rise to the term streeen:
stram + scra = streeen!
Around the same time, a group of Turin filmmakers and critics were discussing the need to pay homage to three key figures of independent cinema in the city, and beyond, who had recently passed away, and with them a certain style of filmmaking that influenced the work of many independent directors to come. Armando Ceste, Alberto Signetto, and Alessandro Tannoia became the protagonists of bisognava muoversi, a festival organized in collaboration with the National Cinema Museum Association, which was the pilot project that led us to Streeen. Held in October 2018, the festival was accompanied by a catalog distributed with the critical magazine Mondo Niovo and in theaters where the films were shown. The opening days of the festival were also the hectic days for us as we launched the very first version of the website, which would allow the codes pasted on an internal page of the catalog to be matched with the codes on the Vimeo player: each copy of the catalog was printed with a different alphanumeric code of a dozen digits which, with a still somewhat laborious step, allowed the public to watch the films at home for 30 days. The success of the festival, both in theaters and via streaming, led us to consider how we could improve the system. We also came up with the idea of using the more anonymous QR codes, paired with editorial releases, movie theater tickets, and museum tickets, to distribute independent films or our curated festivals in a virtually infinite space and to a much wider audience, one that is normally cut off from the limited distribution of arthouse cinema and festivals, often for geographical reasons. Hence the idea of making the experience more enjoyable and functional for the user and conducting professional research on the codes and QR codes, as well as on the films, editorial releases, festivals, and reviews. This led to the creation of a dedicated company, Stremthings, which will release the commercial version of the site. Streeen in January of the new decade, 2020. But this will only be the beginning, there are many resolutions, KEEP FOLLOWING US!
