A Grain in the Cog – The Cinema of Adonella Marena
Throughout her documentary production, Adonella has succeeded in telling stories of marginalization, giving voice to minorities she has encountered on her political and personal journey, often ahead of her time.
Stories of women and resistance (The fighter), of workers (I made Nugatine) or of the “last” (City Souls) defeated by the economic system, of dreamers and resisters (The landing, The Valley Indians), up to the most forgotten, the farm animals (The Animal Factory).
She never thought in watertight compartments, grasping the complexities of the global world and the rapid and violent evolutions of the new economy, highlighting the similarities that unite the characters and stories she encountered, be they former workers, partisan fighters, or animals locked up on industrial farms.
The common thread that links Adonella's works is certainly her gaze, never "scientific" or impartial, always involved.
As she herself wrote:
«Subjectivity is not a limit and the gaze of emotions and desire is not a betrayal of reality. On the contrary, it is the total use of one's testimony, of one's presence in society. This process has entered my work as a documentary maker with joyful awareness. I try to tell characters and situations that can become grains of sand in the gears of a dominant single thought, because they reveal new thoughts, or hidden conflicts, or obtuse conformisms.».
