On April 20, 2017, on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, young police officer Xavier Jugelé lost his life during a terrorist attack, the latest in a long series in France.

Far from the front pages and beneath the uniform he wore, there were – as always in these terrible circumstances – shattered dreams and interrupted lives, as was the love story and the union of this officer with Etienne Cardlels, his partner, who gave a moving speech during the state funeral.

The pain, however, did not produce hatred, "because tolerance and dialogue are the only possible paths."
