On April 20, 2017 in Avenue des Champs-Elysées, the young police office Xavier Jugelé lost his life during a terror attack, the most recent of a long series in France.

Away from the front pages and beneath the uniform he wore, there were – as always in these terrible circumstances – broken dreams and interrupted lives, as interrupted was this officer’s love story and union with Etienne Cardlels, his partner, who gave a moving speech during the state funeral. The pain, however, has produced no hate, “Because tolerance and dialogue are the only possible paths.”
